The Book of the Dun Cow, by Walter Wangerin Jr.

Age recommendations: 14+

Summary: Chauntecleer the Rooster is the prideful structured leader of the chicken coop. Life is perfect for everyone there. But when Wyrm, the ultimate evil trapped beneath the earth, starts to send his murderous minions, the world Chauntecleer loves and leads is violently seized and drained of life. In an epic battle of good versus evil, Chanteclear and his forest friends must fight for those they love.

My review: This book is so good. It is well written, and you will be thinking about it for days and months after you read it. It is a true battle between good and evil, and though heavy and dark at times, shows the true contrast between true good and true evil. You cling to the hope that light will overcome darkness. Life is not easy, and this book does not go easy. It is sorrowful, but in that sorrow there is hope. And because the dark and evil is so real, it makes the small bits of hope so much more powerful to the reader. There are Christian themes and realities, and it will bring up some deep pondering thoughts. As I said: it will leave you thinking about it for months afterward.

Quotes: “Sorrow spoken lends a little courage to the speaker.” “A grudge may be strong. But a grudge isn’t strength!”

Concerns: This book is heavy. There is a lot of violent death and sorrow among animal and forest creatures. Caution when reading.

Overall rating: 4 out of 5
